Laxton - Open Field Village History Day

Sunday 28th June 2009

Laxton is celebrating it's unique history with an event for all the family. The day begins at 10am with a vintage ploughing match for tractors and horses.

At 12 noon other events open at Crosshill Farm, where refreshments will be served all day and there will be a bar.

Events include:

  • Talks by Professor John Beckett of Nottingham University on how Laxton escaped enclosure
  • Heritage films of Laxton
  • Showings of 'The Luttrell Psalter' - a much acclaimed film made by WAG Screen, partly shot in Laxton
  • Costumes and props from the film, including the replica mediaeval plough recently seen on Channel 4's 'Time Team'
  • Displays by Laxton Local History Group, Natural England, Notts Wildlife Trust, RSPB
  • Guided tours of Laxton church, the earliest parts of which date from the 12th century
  • Guided walks to the motte & bailey castle, west field strips and village
  • Tractor and trailer rides to the open fields
